(RacingWire) - Formula One driver Robert Kubica was seriously hurt in a crash during a rally in Italy Sunday morning.
The accident was confirmed via a Twitter entry on the Lotus Renault F1 website. "Robert had an accident this morning in the Ronde di Andora Rally," the website read. "He is undergoing medical checks. Will let you know when we know more."
An update on the team's website confirmed that Kubica has suffered multiple fractures to his right arm, legs and hand and that he is undergoing surgery.
Several published reports suggest doctors are fighting to restore functionality to the driver's right hand.
The recovery from his injuries puts in serious jeopardy Kubica's chance of being in his Lotus Renault when the F1 season launches next month in Bahrain.
The 26-year-old is the first Polish driver in Formula One history. He has won a single grand prix, the Canadian Grand Prix in 2008.
Speculation as to who might replace Kubica includes second year driver Bruno Senna, Lotus Renault's third driver.
RacingWire will be following this story closely and will update it as information becomes available.
