(RacingWire) - In a season of firsts the 2009 Formula One Championship ended with the first ever Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The season ending event was won by Red Bull Renault's Sebastian Vettel.
Vettel won the race after McLaren-Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton dropped out of with brake system problems. Hamilton dominated the first stint after starting the race from the pole position.
Vettel was untouchable after Hamilton dropped out and won without much drama.
Vettel's win cliched him second place in the Driver's Championship over Brawn GP's Rubens Barrichello who finished fourth in the race and third in the championship.
The best battle of the race was the closing laps between Vettel's teammate Mark Webber and World Champion in waiting Jensen Button. Webber didn't succumb to the pressure from Button in the last five laps and completed the Red Bull 1-2 sweep.
The top two spots in the Constructor's Championship were locked up, however long-time rivals McLaren and Scuderia Ferrari were locking horns for third place in the year-end standings. After Hamilton's retirement the battle was left to outgoing Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen and Heikki Kovalainen who likely drove his last race for McLaren.
Kovalainen's 11th place finish compared to Raikkonen's 12th place outing was enough for McLaren to finish third in the points one point ahead of Ferrari.
For the second race in a row Toyota's fill in driver Kamui Kobayashi had a great run, scoring points in his second ever grand prix with a sixth place finish. The finish raised Kobayashi stock as teams begin to lock down their driver lineups for 2010.
