(RacingWire) – The Firestone Freedom 100 Indy Lights race was a 'sit on the edge of your seat' nail-biter with multiple lead changes and at times up to five drivers dicing inches from each other for the lead. Wade Cunningham survived the action packed 100 miler at “The Brickyard” to became the first two-time winner of the Firestone Freedom 100. He also won the race in 1986. Cunningham won the 40-lap race by .1046 of a second over J.R. Hildebrand in the closest finish in event history. Cunningham, who started from the pole, Hildebrand and Sebastian Saavedra swapped the lead nine times. Hildebrand led laps 17-38 before Cunningham made a pass entering Turn 3 of the white flag lap. Two separate incidents resulted in shortened days for two sets of teammates. The most serious crash involved Sam Schmidt Motorsports teammates Anna Beatriz and Gustavo Yacaman. After contact with Yacaman, Beatriz slammed the infield ARMCO nearly head-on. After an extended extrication, Beatriz was taken to the infield care center for x-rays on her elbow and knee. In the other incident, Panther Racing's Martin Plowman lost control of his car right in front of teammate Pippa Mann. Mann had no place to go and both ended up in the wall. Neither driver was injured.
