(RacingWire) IZOD IndyCar Series driver Simona De Silvestero is cleared to drive following a crash that caused a harrowing fire at the Firestone 550K at Texas World Speedway on June 5.

De Silvestro was driving her No.78 Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing car when it contacted the wall on the back stretch. The car caught fire and it took IndyCar safety crews 38 seconds to extract DeSilvestro from her burning car.

Dr. Geoff Bellows said DeSilvestro suffered a minor burn on her right hand. The burn isn't severe enough to keep DeSilvestro from the car.

The safety team had problems putting out the fire when the water hose on the truck didn't work. Eventually, the team used fire extinguishers to put out the fire.

DeSilvestro's exit from the car was also hindered by the head restraint padding which significanlty reduces the cockpit opening.

HVM Racing was highly critical of the safety team's response to the crash. “That was a scary moment and we are glad she is alright,” said Keith Wiggins, HVM Racing Team Principal. “The safety crew should be ashamed of themselves." Team Stargate Worlds' Principal Imran Safiulla added, “I am completely speechless on what transpired after our car hit the wall. I am just glad Simona is OK despite that circus we saw.

Indy Racing League officials issued a statement Monday regarding the safety team's difficulties while responding to the incident.

It reads in part, “First and foremost, we make the safety of our competitors a priority when on the track. The primary hose on the series' safety truck malfunctioned, so the safety team had to go to the backup of the bottles. All equipment is checked prior to going on track before every race. We are examining why the hose malfunctioned to ensure this equipment failure will not happen again.”

According to the IRL release, the safety team consists of 14 safety personnel on race weekends including two trauma physicians, three paramedics and nine firefighter/EMTs. Team members have an average of 20 years experience.

The release made it clear “this problem will be addressed.”
