ALTON, Va. (RacingWire) - Ireland's Peter Dempsey survived a 17 lap crash fest to win the Star Formula Mazda race at Virginia International Raceway.  The race was marred by several full course cautions for incidents all around the 3.27 mile road course.

Dempsey won the drag race out of the final turn to beat Alex Ardoin by .038 seconds.  Joel Miller was third and Jorge Goncalvez finished fourth. 

Conor Daly, son of former Formula One and Champ Car driver Derek Daly started the day sixth and fell back to ninth after having to make an evasive move to avoid a pileup when the pack slowed coming down to take the green after the first restart.  Daly worked his way back up to a fifth place finish.
