MARTINSVILLE, Va. (RacingWire) – Here's are thoughts of some of the driver's regarding the tire issues for Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. - I don’t know. After 12 laps, everybody was kind of falling off pretty fast. There was no rubber built up and there was a lot of marbles.
You couldn’t get out of the bottom groove. You had to run right next to the curb. If you got in the marbles, it would ruin you. Once you got in the marbles, you ruined that set. I mean, there is no way to get them off. We don’t go fast enough here to really grind them off. It was messy. It was just real messy all day.” SHOULD THEY BE TESTING WHENEVER THEY CHANGE THE TIRE? “I think that would be the best thing to do. But, It is hard….of course, if you are going to make a change…obviously. They needed to make a change. There was a reason they made a change. They had to make a change. A lot of people assume ‘Ah, what are they doing messing with the tire. They didn’t need to mess with it’. But there was a reason they had to make a change. But if they are not sure about what is going to happen, then we probably should have some reliable data from testing to make sure it is going to be ok.”
Jeff Gordon - “Well, yesterday was really interesting because I know you guys (the media) heard a lot about the rubber, it didn’t seem like there was really any rubber being laid down on the track, but it was all being thrown into the outside groove. We have seen that before, here, on a clean race track. And I was just surprised it never really laid rubber. So we were wearing the tires really, really bad, which Goodyear brought a little bit softer tire, with great intentions and we all want that, we all want more grip. But we were really struggling a lot with some really bad loose conditions getting into the corners and off the corners. I was just glad that we weren’t alone in that because it was definitely making me nervous with how bad loose the car was getting and that’s something that’s not typical for us here. So we were really challenged with that quite a bit and felt like we made gains on it throughout the day. Right now we’re trying to anticipate what the tires are going to do, what the rubber is going to do. Is it going to lay down? Is that wear going to get better? You certainly think that it should, but you never know these days.
Ken Schrader - “It never has come in, so I don’t know that it will be much better this week. There are more marbles than normal. I guess there was a change in tires, but the tires are doing pretty good. It’s just another race at Martinsville. We deal with this all the time.”
Matt Kenseth - WILL THE TRACK RUBBER IN? “I don’t think so. If it gets a little bit warmer, that rubber might build up like it usually does here, but it will be interesting to watch the truck race. There’s no practice today or anything, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the truck race.”
Carl Edwards - “I was trying to decide how to make these tires work. I thought I warmed up mine a little too much. It’s just so hard to get the tires to go right away. I don’t know if it’s the construction, I guess it’s got to be the compound because once they get warmer, they seem to go faster. Everybody is kind of chasing this ghost out here, trying to figure out what exactly it takes to go fast on the third lap of qualifying. I think we’re good after six or seven laps in race trim, but that’s all I’ve got in that Aflac Fusion
