(RacingWire) – Kyle Busch and Keven Harvick are each $25,000 poorer after NASCAR levied penalties for the pit road incident following Saturday night's Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
In addition to the fines, each driver is on probation for the next four points paying Sprint Cup races. Meaning the probation does not include the upcoming All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway or races in the Nationwide or the Camping World Truck Series.
The incident in question happened on pit road after the race was over. Harvick was upset about an on-track incident where Busch came down on Harvick's No. 29 Chevy spinning him into the outside wall. It appeared to many Busch's move was intentional.
After the race Harvick stopped on pit road and Busch pulled up behind him. When Harvick got out of his car to confront him, Busch pushed Harvick's driverless car out of the way. The No.29 car turned left and crashed into the pit road retaining wall.
According to a NASCAR news release, the drivers violated Section 12-1 of the NASCAR rulebook (actions detrimental to stock car racing – involved in an altercation on pit road after the conclusion of the race).
“These penalties are a result of what occurred on pit road after the race was over,” said Kerry Tharp, NASCAR'S Senior Director for Communications, Competition. “They are about maintaining a safe environment on pit road.”
