(RacingWire) - Kevin Harvick won the Wonderful Pistachios 400 at Richmond International Raceway Saturday night but the story of the night was Dale Earnhardt Jr. who wrecked early then worked his way back into the top 15 before finishing 16th and clinching a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin also wrapped up the final two Chase spots.
Earnhardt Nation nearly suffered a proverbial heart attack on lap eight when Dale Jr. and 12 other drivers wrecked when Clint Bowyer crashed in turn four.
Earnhardt and Hamlin's cars both had heavy front end damage and had to fight back to make the Chase. Hamlin finished 9th in the race and clinched 12th place in the points and the final wild card spot.
Earnhardt hovered on the tail end of the lead lap and went a lap down several times during the first half of the race. He used the free pass three times to get back on the lead lap and was also about to go a lap down twice when cautions came out just in time to keep him from going a lap down.
Earnhardt said he wasn't worried despite the problems.
"I had seen race cars run good at short tracks before and I figured we had all race to fix it. I felt like if we were a good enough team, we'd get the job done. Brad had to run his ass off to win the race, to run in the top five to make it tough on us. He almost did that, but I felt good. I knew if my team could fix the car good enough, and if everything felt the right way for us as far as the cautions and getting the lucky dogs, getting an opportunity to work on the car, we'de be fine."
Hamlin's night was equally impressive. He described his car as being "destroyed" with bent shock mounts and a broken splitter. He credited his crew with doing a great job and never giving up.
"It's amazing how we were able to battle back," said Hamlin. "This car really is destroyed. Shock mounts are all messed up. The splitter is broke off of it. It's just amazing how fast we got this car considering the circumstances. My pit crew just did an amazing job. That's all there is to it. They got the splitter somewhat off the racetrack and we were jsut able to just motor up through there."
Less eventful was Tony Stewart's night. Stewart quietly drove to a seventh place finish keeping him in the top ten and securing his spot in the Chase.
As for the race... Kevin Harvick dominated the most of the first 200 laps and most of the last 100 laps on the way to his fourth race win of the year.
Harvick led 202 laps to take his 18th career Sprint Cup Series win.
Carl Edwards also ran strong leading 113 laps on his way to a second palce finish.
Jeff Gordon rounded out the top three.
