(RacingWire) - Kurt Busch is no longer the drver of the Penske Racing No.22 Dodge.
A news release Monday states the move was by mutual agreement between the team and Busch.
"I appreciate the victories that Kurt has brought Penske Racing and our sponsors over the past six years," said Roger Penske. "While I am disappointed that Kurt will not be racing for our team in the future, both Kurt and I felt that separating at this time was best for all parties, including our team and sponsors. I wish Kurt the best in his future racing endeavors."
“I am grateful to Penske Racing for six very productive years,” said Busch. “Together we won a lot of races -16 in all. Leaving a great organization and a lucrative contract is not easy, but it’s an important step for me and allows me to take a deep breath to work on things that can make me a better driver and a better person. I want to personally thank Roger Penske for the opportunity that he has given me.”
Busch has a long history of on and off-track problems. The most recent a profanity laced attack on ESPN pit reporter Dr. Jerry Punch while Busch was waiting to go live after dropping out of the season finale at Homestead.
This is the second time Busch has been fired after an off-track incident. He was fired by Rousch racing after an incident where he was found to be driving under the influence.
The team says it will evaluate drivers to replace Busch.
One option is Sam Hornish, Jr. Hornish drove a third Penske Racing entry until this year when sponsor funds dried up.
Other possible drivers are David Reutimann, David Ragan or Brian Vickers. All had rides in 2011 and are still unsigned for 2012.
The release also says Busch will look for opportunities with other teams.
